Recruiting Like Google
By: Ken Leslie, EDP
Right now Google is in the process of recruiting the best and brightest software engineers in the world to help build one of the most profitable companies in American Industry. Google is hiring these best and brightest at a rate of ten people a day.
They are hiring Brainpower, and so can you!
Google has hit on the mantra that has made companies like Microsoft and eBay successful. Google understands the GREAT people factor.
In an article in the Wall Street Journal, Google Vice President of Engineering Alan Eustace explained the philosophy. One top-notch engineer is worth “300 times or more than the average.” Eustace pointed out that many Google services like Gmail and Google News were started by a single person. How is that for a return on investment for bright people?
The results…Google’s revenue has increased six fold between 2002 and 2004 to $3.2 Billion. In the past 15 months, since its initial public offering in August of last year, Google has grown from 2600 employees to 5000 as of September 30th. That’s 160 people a month.
Yes, it’s the people.
Bill Gates has been credited having a similar passion for the brightest in building Microsoft saying “A great programmer is worth a hundred good ones.”
Yes it’s the people. So what does this have to do with the document industry?
Everything! It is beating your competitors to hire the best and brightest that will ensure your profitability. If you hire better sales people than your competitors, it will be your firm getting the deal. If you hire better technical people than your competitors, it is your firm that will have the better products those better sales people can sell. And if you hire better management, they will be true motivators and leaders of your troops, leading the firm to profitability.
Yes, it’s the people.
So what can we learn from Google? It is simply another example of doing things right, just as Microsoft and eBay have done to build such profitable businesses. The process to fill Google’s pipeline of best and brightest is exactly the same process you can use.
