Ken's Notes

After an event as tragic as 9-11, how does one begin to write a monthly column? An expression of feelings would take the entire space. Of course, as a business columnist, I could distill the impact on businesses and hiring. Or, as I choose to do here, I can be brief in sharing my grief and our resolve.

Every one of us has been dramatically impacted by the events of 9-11.

We are deeply saddened by these events. For in hurting those in NYC, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania, they have hurt us all. For the victims, the heroes, and their families; we, as a nation, have opened our hearts and our wallets. We as a nation will do all we can to ease, and avenge, your pain.

Despite the tragedy and new uncertainty, I am not alone in being amazingly inspired by the American people rallying together as one great nation. Yes, the towers have come down, but so too have fences between neighbors, walls between races, and shields between human hearts.

We have become ONE GREAT NATION again. The words in our patriotic songs and pledges have meaning that now resonates through the very fabric of our hearts and souls. For many in this generation, it is a powerful new consciousness.

Our previously self-centered, narcissistic attitudes have been replaced with one willing to sacrifice at all cost for the sake of freedom. For we recognize what is at stake here -- Freedom. This is what was taken on the day of 9-11. The lives in NYC lost their freedom that day. The rest of us lost our sense of freedom, as we knew it.

Yes, we will indeed suffer in the months, maybe even years, ahead. Be prepared for this. Manage your expectations and resources to provide for this eventuality. For this is the price of freedom, as our forefathers have demonstrated. We must let freedom ring!

Mid-Atlantic Ocean City

Late afternoon on September 11, Paul Letournier, EDP announced, after conferring with the Mid-Atlantic Board, "We are not going to let those bastards stop us!", despite the fact Paul was yet unable to confirm the safety of family members in NYC. With this spirit they decided to proceed with the scheduled Mid-Atlantic meeting September 13th through 15th in Ocean City.

As they had me scheduled to give the Keynote on Friday morning, I figured if they were crazy enough to go on with it, then I was crazy enough to be there. (This is the same thought I had two years ago when Hurricane Floyd hit the Mid-Atlantic meeting in Ocean City head-on.)

With flights canceled Wednesday, and a promise of only limited flights late Thursday evening, I decided to assure my attendance by driving down on Thursday. The scenic 12 hour drive, mostly through the mountains on the seemingly 6 ft wide Pennsylvania Turnpike, seemed dark. I got the feeling that we, as a nation, were still in shock as there were so few cars and trucks on the road.

Upon arrival, I found over 60 members and 11 vendors made it to the meeting. The spirit of camaraderie and inspired patriotism was as rampant as the technology talk. This palpable spirit grew as Friday night and Saturday came. Saturday night we spent time with some locals making red, white and blue ribbons.

Flags began cropping up everywhere.

By the drive home Sunday there were literally thousands of cars on the road with flags in the windows. And there were hundreds of highway overpasses adorned with patriotism. By Sunday, America had risen. God Bless Americans!!!

The NEW Ohio Chapter

At Leadership this year, Chapter President Kathy Crowley and the Board of Directors recognized the need to expand the NE Ohio Chapter to include all of Ohio, creating the Ohio Chapter.

Hence, the brand new Ohio Chapter held it’s hastily planned and executed inaugural meeting September 21st in Toledo Ohio. (Home of Klinger, Damn proud! LOL)

The Seagate Convention Center played host to a small cadre of attendees assembled to hear Mr. Stephen Poe – CEO, Nautilus Solutions present "The Document in the Third Millenium" and "Real World Applications of XML"

Of the almost 20 assembled, an additional goal was to assist in identifying and recruiting members to assist in running the chapter. Kathy loves her volunteer work for Xplor but said holding all of the offices is quite taxing. Look for this Chapter to come very alive over the next 12 months.

And Finally…

Congratulations are in order for our friend Mr. Bill McCalpin, EDP, CDIA, MIT, LIT. (He is the only person in the world to hold all four of these prestigious designations.) Bill has been elected to the Xplor Board of Directors as the Southern Region representative. He had formerly been an associate member on the Board and on the Executive Committee. Congrats Bill! Where Was God?

(Note: A Friend sent me this, and I share it with you.)

I had a very dear friend question my faith in God right after the terrorist attack on America. Her question was simply put, "Where is your God today?"

She was very hurt, as all Americans were, so I tried not to react defensively. Since that moment I have prayed and grieved over the disastrous events. However, I believe I have the answer. I know where God was the morning of September 11, 2001! He was very busy.

First of all, he was trying to discourage anyone from taking those flights. Those four flights together had the capacity to hold over 1000 passengers and there were only 266 aboard.

He was on those 4 commercial flights giving terrified passengers the ability to stay calm.

On one of the flights he was giving strength to passengers to try to overtake the hijackers to prevent that plane from crashing into any other high-traffic buildings.

He was busy creating obstacles for the World Trade Center employees so they would be late for work. After all, only around 20,000 were at the towers when the first jet hit. Since the buildings hold over 50,000 workers, this was a miracle in itself. How many of the people who were employed at the WTC told the media that they were late for work that morning or they had traffic delays?

He was holding up 2-110 story buildings so that 2/3 of those 20,000 workers could get out. I was so amazed that the top of the towers didn't topple when the jets impacted!

He was busy leading employees out of the buildings who could not see their way through the smoke and confusion. How many of you heard the numerous stories of employees who were lead by an unknown man out of the buildings as the towers crumbled. Only to turn to thank this stranger who was nowhere to be found...with no footprints from this stranger in the ashes leading their "guide" away from the site?

Although this is without a doubt the worst thing I have seen in my life, I can see God's miracles in every bit of it. I keep thinking about my friend and praying for her every chance I have. I can’t imagine going through such a difficult time and not believing in God. Life would be hopeless.

Keep your faith throughout all of life's tragedies. If you look for them, you will find there are miracles in every one of them!

God Bless You!

Ken
