Mid-Atlantic Region Meeting

The fabulous coastal town of Ocean City, MD was again host of the annual fall regional meeting for Maxplor. Nearly 100 people attended the two day conference.

Thanks in great part to the efforts of Regional Vice President, Wilma Grant, the speaker roster was exceptional.

Ken Leslie, EDP

Publisher

The conference opened with a very creative state-of-Xplor presentation by new Xplor GM Bill McCalpin, EDP. Bill did a great job in energizing the crowd to Xplor's mission.

Wilma then brought in speakers from the US government. As many users attending either currently do business with, or wish to do business with the US government, this was very well received. (Doing business with the government can be very rewarding. Hey, they are the only ones who have lots of money right now!)

The most impressive was the GPO panel discussion hosted by Tim Coleman, EDP. The topic was "Perspectives: Federal Publishing & GPO – How Can You Do Business With The GPO?" The panel consisted of Scott Stovall – Chief, Procurement Support Branch, US Govt. Printing Office; Kirk Knoll – Electronic Publishing Specialist, US Govt. Printing Office; Leroy Corbin, V-P New Business Development, News Printing Co. (GPO contractor).

And then there were the crabs! And more crabs! For a Midwestern boy like me, (and a recent convert (thanks to Kathy Rixham, EDP; Barry Lietuvnikas, EDP; and Paul and Mickey LeTourneur, EDP), those crabs are something my palate always looks forward to! Thanks pals!

The Global Experience

Everybody is gearing up for the Xplor Global conference in Anaheim October 27th to 30th. Already the confirmed attendance for this year exceeds last year's attendance.

Companies that have not spent money on technology the past two years are coming to global with open checkbooks.

Some vendors will be caught understaffed as they have pared back their participation. Others are expanding their participation to meet the demand.

Is your company sending you to global? Then be SURE to attend the session Wednesday at 11 in room 210B. Stephen Poe, EDP will be presenting "Your Return Ticket." Here is the session description:

The economy is tight and companies are cutting back on training and conferences. How do you justify this trip and convince your management to fund you to attend next year's Xplor Global? This session provides a plan for making sure you can come back in 2003. Topics covered include your overall strategy, writing a trip report, demonstrating value with solutions you bring back and contacts you've made, and placing a dollar value on all of it. This will be an interactive session. Please come share what problems you've solved at Global and what benefits you are taking back with you.

The same techniques taught here can be used to justify not only your global attendance, but your participation in Xplor in the local level, and your involvement in Xplor leadership as well. If you are looking for an accurate way to justify your time and the company's money, do not miss this session!

Certification

Many times we have discussed and promoted the advantages of Certification. At global this year there will be two programs designed to help you get on the right track to certification.

Monday at 2:00, Dianna Hillman, EDP, Terry Johnson, EDP and I will be presenting "Certification: Differentiate Yourself."

What is the real value of a certification?

Is it worth your time and effort?

What is the return on investment in dollars?

This presentation examines the many forms of certification and their value to your career and income. Special focus is directed to examining the value of the EDP certification program, including an explanation of the process to earn one. If you're looking for a motivational kick-start to get going along the path to certification, this session is for you.

You'll walk away with everything you need to know in order to attend the EDP workshop Scott Kelly, EDP is presenting Tuesday at 4:45 p.m.

If you are ready to start the EDP certification process, or have already begun it, this is an unprecedented chance to make some real progress. Come to this workshop for practical help from experienced pros that can help mentor you through the certification process. If you've received your portfolio and put it aside, bring it with you, along with examples of your work. Don't miss this incredible opportunity for one-on-one help and guidance.

We'll See you all there!  ------>
