Ken's Notes

Is it me, or does it seem children are starting school earlier and earlier each year? As if they are trying to get a jump on getting the knowledge that will turn them to productive adults, and for some, members of the electronic document industry.

But the fact is, there are less children going to school, which means there are less children going to college, which means there are less technically skilled people coming into our industry. So for at least the next decade there will continue to be a shortage of individuals ready and skilled to fill the roles in our industry.

For an individual, this is a high degree of job security in our industry as long as one keeps their skills sharp.

For a company, this means adding technically qualified staff will remain a challenge, unless they have a good recruiting plan for the long term. (I was going to insert an advertisement for our services in this sentence, but, hey, I’m on vacation so I decided not to.)

Ocean City Xplor Mid-Atlantic Meeting

On September 12th – 16th, several hundred Maxplor members will convene for the annual Ocean City meeting, one of the best in the country. Click here to get the info Click here to get the info.

This year, the innovative region will be providing an extended agenda with dual track breakout sessions too meet the needs of all of their members.

Wednesday will be an Elixir Users Group meeting, with member agenda beginning Thursday morning. An interesting and productive event is the Thursday evening Networking session in the exhibit hall. Exhibitors including Elixir, Group 1 Software, Pitney Bowes, Solimar, IBM, Standard Graphics, Software AG Inc., Mobius, Scitex Digital Printing, Bell & Howell MMT, Firstlogic Inc., New Media Technology, OPServer, Stralfors and Gunther International sponsor the session.

Friday morning I will be presenting "Why Get Certified in the Asylum of Business?" (Catchy title, eh?) Paul LeTourneur, EDP, thought the topic of certification, whether it be an EDP, MCSE, CSFP,PMP, etc, was something of interest to the members.

As I am doing the Friday morning Keynote slot when certain individuals are sure to be very hung-over, I am planning a little surprise, of course.

It’s not too late to register for this exceptional meeting. Click here.

Ohio Chapter Meeting

As a result of the Leadership meeting in January, and through the work of Chapter President Kathy Crowley and the rest of the Midwest Chapter Board of Directors, the NE Ohio Chapter is being expanded to cover all of Ohio.

We here in Ohio will be presenting the first ever Ohio Chapter meeting on Friday, September 21st in the beautiful city of Toledo Ohio. (Yep, home of Klinger, damn proud….) As a central point between Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Western Indiana and Detroit, we hope to attract many old and new members to this meeting.

The theme will be "The Future of Tomorrow Today" and Kathy is getting world class speakers for this meeting. Email me at ken@ssc-online.com if you are in our area and would like more information on attending.

We will also offer to help arrange a ride-sharing program from the different cities. This could be another chance for members to network with others in our industry. More details to follow VERY soon.

And Of Course, Xplor Global

The Orange County Convention Center in Orlando will again be host to the Xplor 2001 Global Conference and Exhibit from October 28th to November 2nd.

I am looking forward to the Thursday Keynote as it will be about you. Tom Petzinger, Jr., columnist at the Wall Street Journal, will be talking about "The New Pioneers: The Men and Women who are Transforming the Workplace and Marketplace".

There will be over 250 sessions for those who want to learn, and over 250 exhibitors for those who want to buy. The sessions will be very beneficial to you as many are covering the transition from print to the web. For the buyers, the products offer this same value.

We hope to see all of you there, as this Conference truly is the annual centerpiece to our industry. You can get information on the sessions and exhibitors by going here.

Peace!
